Barbie – She’s Just Like Us

I don’t know about you ladies, but ever since I can remember, I’ve always wanted to dress, look and live like Barbie! You can ask ANY of my friends growing up, I had the Barbie mansion, the limo, the pool, all of the kids and Ken! I even had the cutest little red Volkswagen Beetle (or as we used to call it punch buggy).

I think I can say that one of the reasons why I admired and looked up to Barbie so much, wasn’t because she had beautiful long blonde hair and great legs, but more so because she had such a great sense of style, a family and a woman that wore many hats, literally. Barbie’s vision was the “American career woman” and while a lot of little girls only see that Barbie is a great toy, I think I learned at a young age from Barbie. I learned that she was representing an era of classified beauty and ambition. I truly did enjoy having all of those different Barbies with the different careers and how she dressed to go to work, to shop, to play and go on a date with Ken. Although I used to play a lot with Barbies, I always knew I wanted to be a businesswoman, possibly because of Barbie!

So imagine my excitement when I found out this morning that Barbie, will be more like us soon. Cosmopolitan reports that Mattel is beginning to roll out a collection of Barbies with articulated ankles — and Barbie’s newly-human joints allow her to wear both heels and flats. This change debuted earlier this year with the new Barbie Film Director doll, whose box sets includes two pairs of shoes: Mary Jane flats and high-heeled boots, with the option to wear both. It might be a small alteration in the world of kids’ toys, but it’s certainly an important one.

In addition to the amazing news that Barbies will be able to wear flats like humans, the Fashionista line will include Barbies of eight different skin tones, 14 different facial sculpts, 18 eye colors, 22 hair styles, and 23 hair colors — again, making Barbie a little more like you and me.

THIS WEEK’S EXCLUSIVE: DRESS FOR THE DAY

“You know, I have to say that starting your own business is probably the scariest thing you will ever do.” -Anisha Mukherjee, co-founder of Dress For The Day

As a fashion blogger, it is my duty to inform all of you of the coolest and most innovative new creations that are out there in the fashion and beauty industry. With that being said, let me introduce you to Dress For The Day. DFTD is, as they call it, “the ultimate fashion calculator” for your wardrobe. Most women, like me, like to pre-plan their outfits and know exactly what they are wearing to any occasion they are attending. Any occasion, from baby showers, birthday parties, black tie events, cocktail parties, girls night out, holidays etc., we all dread the day when we actually have to go out and put together an outfit from scratch. Where do you even begin? Well that is where Dress For The Day comes in! It is a one-stop shop app where you input the occasion you are going to, your personal style and what the weather will be like where you are going and voila! You are then given options among options of outfits worn by every day women in the streets to choose from and you can shop right from the picture! I think it is such a fabulous concept and guess what? The app was created by two young women who just understood the need for women who don’t know where to begin building their outfits and wardrobe! Don’t you just love the entrepreneurial woman? I know I do!

I sat down with Anisha Mukherjee, co-founder of Dress For The Day at her gorgeous apartment in Midtown Manhattan to talk more about the app!

Sherly Tavarez: What is Dress For The Day?

Anisha Mukherjee: DFTD is every girls dream, it’s basically a fashion calculator that helps women get dressed for each day based on personal style, occasion, weather and budget. So it’s a one stop shop to figure out what to wear, for either every day or for upcoming occasions. It’s very simple 1+1=2, you pick your personal style and then you’ll get a bunch of street style looks based on your selections and also based on your weather. The street style looks all come from the users themselves, so our philosophy is the everyday woman inspires the everyday woman. Let’s make fashion approachable, attainable and not intimidating. (I love this!)

ST: Who are the founders?

AM: The founders are myself Anisha and my business partner Shradha, who couldn’t be with us today because she just welcomed a beautiful baby girl! The two of us have known each other for about 10 years and we were just out to dinner one day 3 years ago catching up on life and figuring out all the different weddings, interviews, bridal showers and trips that we had going on and we were sort of just frustrated that there was no easy tool, you know we were sick of going on the style boards and these really time consuming web sites to put together outfits and inspirations and we kind of just wanted an easy one-stop shop so we thought “why not create this ourselves?” So we did and we tested it out. We saw that our friends needed it, their friends needed it so we wireframed it, we linked up with a tech team and we launched the website 2 years ago and we launched the app last week! We have some exciting partnerships coming out this summer and we’re launching men’s in the fall which is going to be really exciting! I had more of the legal business background, I went to law school and I practiced in the music industry for entertainment law for about 3 years. Shradha worked in the fashion industry, she went to Parsons and then she worked at Luxottica for about 4 years after graduating. So we’ve both been in the city and submerged to the street style aspect. We get our inspiration from women walking out in the street and we wanted to embody that in Dress For The Day as much as we could! It’s just the two of us on the team, two women trying to make it!

ST: Being two female entrepreneurs, how do you feel you are perceived in the industry?

AM: You know, I have to say that starting your own business is probably the scariest thing you will ever do. We both had full time careers in the corporate world prior to starting DFTD and quitting our jobs and doing DFTD full time which we did actually about a year ago was the scariest decision but the best decision that we’ve ever made. It was scary because females in the startup arena, in the tech arena and then in the fashion arena, it sort of felt like we had all forces working against each other from sort of like a gender perspective, that was the perception. Once we stepped out there, the start up community is really welcoming, especially being a minority woman, it’s difficult to gauge how others will perceive you and they think oh you’re a girl in fashion you know its very surface. When you start your own business you have to know every single facet of that business, we have to know the tech, the fashion, the social media, the legal. It’s really all about being confident and showing everyone that you have the ambition and determination that everyone else around you has! We don’t have 20 years of experience in the business but we are learning something new everyday!

ST: What is the price point at DFTD?

AM: Great question! We have all price points. For Shradha and myself we will splurge sometimes but we’ll totally be budget other times and I think that’s the beauty of fashion. Take for example all of the different collaborations, BALMAIN for H&M. It’s juxtaposing the high-end designer with the sort of fast fashion and we’re sort of seeing that come to flourish more and more as the years go on in fashion so for our site, you can shop at K-mart and Target, you can shop at Macy’s and Club Monaco and you can shop at Bergdorf and TopShop so we really make sure that we cover the entire spectrum of price points because we want the user to be able to decide how she wants to dress and how much money she wants to spend.

ST: Where do you see DFTD in 5 years from now?

AM: We have a lot of fun tech related goals. We’re building up on our app and website, but our retail partnerships are really important to us and we have a lot of cool publication partnerships in the works as well. We definitely see men’s coming to maybe an equal playing field as women just because we’ve had so many men request DFTD from the day that we launched, men are just an confused as we are, if not more. And men are really private, they aren’t going to be texting their friends like “hey, what should I wear?”, they will do it in the privacy of their own home so why not have this easy tech app? We also have this fashion forum which is basically just like a big group chat where you can get feedback from everyone in the community on just about anything, we hope to see that grow too!

ST: What is the once piece of wardrobe that you can’t live without?

AM: I would have to say the things that I can’t live without, I call them my MC Hammer pants, I know that’s ridiculous but they are sort of like those palazzo, tapered baggy pants from H&M. They are cotton and I wear them everywhere, to the airport, I dress them up with heels and wedges at night, I wear them during the day with flats and they were only $20! They are just so versatile! I also have a great navy blazer with sort of the gold military button look from J.Crew that I got for a steal again that I wear all the time, can be dressed up with heels and white jeans or just thrown over jeans and a white t-shirt. Those are definitely my “go-to” pieces.

ST: Tell us an interesting fact about you that we wouldn’t know by just looking at you?

AM: Well you may know by looking at me because I am on the shorter side, but when I was in the 7th grade, I played a munchkin on The Wizard of Oz in Madison Square Garden with Roseanne Barr as the wicked witch of the west! That was my 10 minutes of fame on Broadway when I was ’bout 10 or 11 years old.

HOW DO I COLOR-BLOCK?

Color-blocking is a trend that I feel is so much fun and age appropriate for everyone! Sometimes it is easy to feel like you are doing it wrong and just throwing on a bunch of colors and to be truthful, most of the time that really is just what you are doing, the key is to throw together colors that work well together. It’s very easy to color-block if you follow these simple rules.

1. Say what you want to say with what you wear. They say dressing is a way to express yourself without having to speak. Make sure you show your personality through your clothes that day!

2. Wear colors that compliment one another. (i.e. baby blue and coral, pink and red, light shade of blue with a darker shade of blue)

3. Don’t be afraid to be BOLD. If you are willing to try the color-blocking trend, do it all the way! Wear the bold colors that you wouldn’t normally wear in your day to day wardrobe.

4. Color-block with just 1 piece. If you are not comfortable starting off by color-blocking your entire outfit, start by color blocking just one piece. It can be your shoes that stand out with a bland all black or all white outfit!

5. Be YOU! Make sure to always be you and stay true to your own style no matter what trend you are trying! If you are not comfortable in what you are wearing, you will exude it, so make sure to make this trend yours!

My color-blocking outfit consists of 2 different type of pastel colors and a neutral color. The baby blue and coral are both different color pastels that work well together and the grey shoes balance out the look with a toned down neutral color. Try this one out! I love full skirts and this one is from my favorite designer at the moment Victor Lopez- custom made! ❤

5 Pieces to add to your wardrobe TODAY!

I don’t know about you, but for me, wearing a boring outfit is NEVER an option. Standing aside from the crowd is not as hard as you may think, you just don’t know what to do with what you have, and that’s ok because I’m here to help you! Going out to dinner or a club isn’t just wearing a satin dress with silver heels anymore, those days are long gone! You can look good at ANY occasion if you just add the right pieces to your outfit! Playing it safe is boring and so played out! When I get dressed there is always at least one piece in my outfit that just “POPS” whether it is my shoes, a statement necklace, or even just a simple accessory such as a scarf. Make your outfit pop with these “here I am, but I didn’t actually try” statement pieces!

Add a POP of color with shoes!

picstitch-3

You can be wearing the most “plain jane” outfit and suddenly you throw on some heels that have NOTHING to do with that outfit and it just works! They’re going to stare regardless…why not give them something worth staring at?!

Add a POP of color with a scarf!

picstitch

Scarves are that simple accessory that you can throw on with any outfit whether casual or dressy and make your outfit pop!

Add a POP of color with a statement necklace!

picstitch-1

It’s called a “statement necklace” for a reason. Wear one = make a statement. Simple.

Add a POP of color with a bag!

picstitch-4

Your bag can complete your outfit by giving it that POP of color it lacked. The good thing is that you no longer have to match your bag to your shoes or wear the same color as your bag, we’re all for you wearing 5 different colors in one outfit!

Add a POP of color with a belt!

picstitch-5

A belt is another one of those accessories that is often underestimated and overlooked, just look at how it brings some life to these two outfits above! Whether it’s a solid colored belt or a print it makes the outfit pop and that’s what you’re looking for!

Now go to your closet and find those pieces that POP! XoXo

Summer time fine…

Well Summer is here and it has come with a vengeance. You know, winter lasted so long here in New York City, I forgot I had summer clothes somewhere very deep in my closet. I have such a hard time deciding what to wear in the summer, it’s like I can wear whatever I want, which means there are a lot of options to choose from. Winter is easy, sweater and a coat everyday. Haha. So I want to go in to some fun summer outfits that look great and won’t make you regret wearing them half way through the day! I will be posting these throughout the following weeks starting with this great ensemble by Victor Lopez!

The Jersey Dress

The Jersey dress is one of the most versatile dresses that I can think of. Which is why it is one of my favorites! I have to say that this burgundy color is such a great transition from winter into spring which lasts so long here in New York City, in reality it can be winter one day and spring the next, you just never know. Which brings me to how you can layer it so many different ways, for example the spring Olivia Pope coat and the every season leather jacket. These pictures were taken at the Highline in Chelsea, one of my favorite spots here in the city!
